No action on climate because Politicians are too busy playing politics

Updated: Nov 7

The problem is that we, apparently, don't  realise that what we're doing is almost futile and in vain attempts at getting the world into order and real decisive action on climate and ecological crises.. because, we can spend a whole decade being proponents of Climate justice, spend a lifetime being advocates and a voice for our fragile and dear planet. However, politicians won't listen. You ever wondered why?

Well, it all boils down to the simple fact that politicians are NOT climate-concerned. In other words, they don't care about the climate crisis or stopping global warming. That's because they are TOO busy playing politics all day, to the point at which they just cannot even properly function without doing so, because they became addicted to it.

The 10-Year-Old Video Game Addict

A mother tells her son to stop playing and go do his household chores—for example taking the trash out or washing the dishes. Now, that boy, most likely will not just 'stop playing video games' to go do chores, right? So, what does he do? In order not to immediately anger his mother, he tries to appease or stall her, so he says 'OK, mum, on it, right now,' and so the mother leaves the room and a hour passes... and the boy is STILL playing video games.

Afterwards, the mother comes and, like and activist 'You have failed me,' she protests. The boy says 'OK,OK, mom, I will, I just have to finish this level.'

Metaphorically speaking, politicians are like that 10-year-old boy who just plays video game all day long, and just can't stop playing. We young people are like the mother of that boy.

That is like politicians saying 'economic growth' or 'money and subsidies for fossil fuels'... those 'levels' are these things, and so the story goes on and on. With the mother giving the boy a tough time while she rebukes him with her withering glare and with the boy just not caring and saying 'OK, OK, mum, I will, just finish this level or beat this boss villain and I will do.'

And the end result is,

  • That neither the boy was able to play in peace without any disturbance from his mother, as she is incessantly insists on him that he gets up and does his chores,

  • Wiith the mother being exhausted and totally consumed, both regarding her lost time constantly telling the boy to get up and do his chores, a bit like an activist, really, and regarding expending her energy on something that does not need that much energy to do..

  • With the trash STILL in the house, and the dishes still not done!!

But, wait.. there's more...

Then the boy's best friend comes over for a sleepover party or just hanging out, and figures out that his friend's mother is mad at the boy because he hasn’t done his chores. So, in order to get into his friend's mother's good books and be seen as a good friend in her eyes, he simply urges his friend to do his chores before they play.

The boy resists this of course, then his friend tells him that if he doesn't listen and answer to his mother's requests of doing his chores, then he would not play with him, effectively threatening the boy with ruining his plans of playing with him, and being left all alone. So, the boy, for the sake of being able to play with his friend, gets up (finally, what an ordeal!) and does his chores, and his friend may even be kind enough to help the boy out. Thus, the boy does his chores, but, the crucial thing to notice here is that he doesn't do it because his mother 'protested' and said so—he did it because otherwise his plan of playing with his best friend would’ve gone down the drain.

That's exactly what's happening right now in the world. We, just like the boy's mother, are trying to convince or persuade world 'leaders' to act on climate and take the issue seriously and not waste any more time. And world leaders constantly procrastinating, deflecting, constantly diverting our attention to the fact that they're saying 'OK, yes we need to act, now.'

But, that's what we are missing: we need someone like that 'friend of the boy'; someone who is an insider in politics; someone whom politicians will listen and follow the instructions of; someone not, like the mother in the story, which represents us, young people, but like that boy's friend, someone whom, if politicians won't listen to, he would just do something they would not like, (like when the boy's friend threateningly admonished him that he would not play with him for the day).

That kind of person is nowhere to be seen on the world stage right now. If that person, whom politicians will have to listen to, exists, then he would be the missing link in the chain to a sustainable future and saving the human species by saving the planet.

Another thing that most people either don't realise or turn a blind eye to, is the fact that, to uncover any truth or to solve any case of injustice, you have to follow the money. Now, the world spends stupendous amounts of money into bolstering their military capabilities.

The World spends in the ballpark of 1.5 to 2 trillion dollars annually on weaponry and weaponisation. The U.S. takes the no 1 spot by having it's military budget north of $700B, or about 40% of the total world military spending.. But then don't take any funds from the department of defence, the intelligence agencies and the state department, money that is used to kill people, and in lots of cases pit them against one another, or conspire with other countries.

Wrap up..

So, in short, there is not enough funding for climate action because the resources are being squandered on complete nonsense to fight those with different ideologies, like Russia or China, for example, and just destroy and upend the Middle East and Southwestern Asia, turning them into some of the most shambolic and chaotic places to be in.

Thus, it's all about fighting other countries and people whom you don't agree with religiously and in terms of your different ideologies and ways of government.

If we are to live beyond the 21st century, we need to all come together, sit on the same table, leave our differences, egos, stereotyping, prejudice, discriminatory notions and politics on the doorstep before we enter the room. Otherwise, we’d be kidding nobody but ourselves and it would be just a matter of time until we’d argued ourselves into extinction.
